A note from the administrator.
I have had to close the forum to new members. Registration is shut. I'm sorry for it - but I can no longer vouch for who comes through the door.
You may also find that certain older topics are no longer where you left them. I have, with great reluctance, removed a small number of threads and posts from this forum. I did so at the written request of a firm of solicitors acting for the landowner, who hold that the material touched on matters they would prefer were not aired in public.
I have complied, because I am one man and they are not. I want it set down plainly, here, that I did so under protest, and that I do not accept the grounds. Nothing removed was untrue. Nothing removed was anyone's business to suppress.
But I will not delete this board. What is left here stays, and you may read it for as long as I can keep the lights on. I have locked the doors; I have not burned the house. I have kept copies of everything. I would ask, gently, that those of you who hold anything of your own do the same.

About this forum
This is the final time i am going to try to move this forum - it might be a mess and i might have lost some stuff on the moves.
Some of it i had to do manually. If its not the letters from lawyers, its people trying to hack the board, so i have locked everything down. If you want to access and post, send me an email - trust me, i am being VERY careful of bullies and trolls.
At the rate they are going they will scare everyone away - and for what? I don't know.
______
This is a small forum for the study of the antiquities and parish history of the Wiltshire downs: the lost villages, the earthworks and standing stones, the old roads, and the folklore that has gathered about them. I set it up in the spring of 2011, having grown tired of watching good local knowledge die with the people who held it, and finding no convenient place to set it down.
We are amateurs in the proper sense of the word: we do this for the love of it. Some of us have spent forty years in the record offices; some of us have simply walked the same footpaths since childhood and noticed things. Both are welcome, and both are needed. The professional has his journals; the rest of us have had nowhere, until now.
A note on what we cover. We concern ourselves chiefly with the country between the Marlborough Downs and the Vale, the Ridgeway and the Wansdyke, Avebury and the long barrows. We stray where the subject leads us. But sometimes we do go further afield to find answers.
We hunt, but not for treasure: what we are after cannot be dug up or carried home, a lost village, a name fallen out of the record, the road back to a place that cannot be found twice. If it is metal and money you want, you will find no welcome here; the detectorists have forums of their own.
For how we conduct ourselves here, see the board rules.
