A note from the administrator.

I have had to close the forum to new members. Registration is shut. I'm sorry for it - but I can no longer vouch for who comes through the door.

You may also find that certain older topics are no longer where you left them. I have, with great reluctance, removed a small number of threads and posts from this forum. I did so at the written request of a firm of solicitors acting for the landowner, who hold that the material touched on matters they would prefer were not aired in public.

I have complied, because I am one man and they are not. I want it set down plainly, here, that I did so under protest, and that I do not accept the grounds. Nothing removed was untrue. Nothing removed was anyone's business to suppress.

But I will not delete this board. What is left here stays, and you may read it for as long as I can keep the lights on. I have locked the doors; I have not burned the house. I have kept copies of everything. I would ask, gently, that those of you who hold anything of your own do the same.

<t>I have been a long time deciding whether to say anything in this thread, and I am still not certain I should. I will say this much. I do not believe you are hysterical, any of you. I have kept this forum fifteen years on a principle of citing what you can and not reading mysteries into gaps, and ...

<t>Welcome, and you will forgive me if I am more careful than I once was; the forum has had a hard year or two and I have learned to be. You have not said anything mad. You have said the thing several of us have felt and not known how to put, that the quiet has a shape to it. I will not tell you it ...

<t>The post above was Bill's, and I have taken it down, and I want it set on the record here exactly why, because I will not have it thought I did it willingly. Bill named the firm, and quoted from one of the letters he has had, which he is perfectly entitled to do, the letters being his own propert...

<t>I have removed the post and the account. I do not do so lightly, and I will say only that the manner of it left me no choice; a forum cannot run on people being shouted at. Whether there was anything in what was said underneath the manner of it is a separate question, and not one I can settle by ...

<t>I did not remove Len, Janet, nor his thread, nor anything of his, and I want that stated plainly because the alternative is one I do not care to sit with. I have looked. I keep the records a host of my sort can keep, and by them Len Hatch joined us in the spring of 2022 and posted, by my count, a...

<t>The name itself is not in much doubt, and it is the god, not the Devil. It is recorded as Wodnes dic in a charter of 903, Woden's dyke, the boundary set to the chief of the old gods. The Devil arrives later and by a familiar road: the Church spent centuries turning the old gods into devils, and a...

<t>Bill, I would keep every one of those letters. I say that from habit rather than to alarm you; a paper trail is the one defence a private man has against an organisation with deeper pockets than his own. You are within your rights to refuse, repeatedly, and to ask them in writing to cease contact...

<t>That is not a sad thought, Nan, it is the truest one on this board in a twelvemonth. Not every deserted village was plague or enclosure. Some simply had the life bought quietly out of them by a party who could afford to wait. We study the old ones. We are, I begin to think, sitting in a new one.<...
