A note from the administrator.

I have had to close the forum to new members. Registration is shut. I'm sorry for it - but I can no longer vouch for who comes through the door.

You may also find that certain older topics are no longer where you left them. I have, with great reluctance, removed a small number of threads and posts from this forum. I did so at the written request of a firm of solicitors acting for the landowner, who hold that the material touched on matters they would prefer were not aired in public.

I have complied, because I am one man and they are not. I want it set down plainly, here, that I did so under protest, and that I do not accept the grounds. Nothing removed was untrue. Nothing removed was anyone's business to suppress.

But I will not delete this board. What is left here stays, and you may read it for as long as I can keep the lights on. I have locked the doors; I have not burned the house. I have kept copies of everything. I would ask, gently, that those of you who hold anything of your own do the same.

Hello. I have gone back and forth about whether to post this for a fortnight, so forgive me if it comes out wrong. I found this forum by accident a while ago, looking up the old ruin and the saying about it, and I have read more or less the whole thing since, every board, years of it. I dont really know why I couldnt stop. I dont have anything to add, I am not a historian or a walker or anything, I just moved out this way and started noticing things and then I found all of you having noticed them for years. I suppose I am writing because it has gone so quiet, and the quiet has a shape to it that I cant explain and dont much like, and I wanted to know if everyone is alright. That probably sounds mad from a complete stranger. I am sorry. I just didnt want to be one more person reading and saying nothing.

Welcome, and you will forgive me if I am more careful than I once was; the forum has had a hard year or two and I have learned to be. You have not said anything mad. You have said the thing several of us have felt and not known how to put, that the quiet has a shape to it. I will not tell you it is nothing, because I try not to tell people things I do not know to be true. I will tell you that you are welcome here, that we were a kindly place and mean to go on being one, and that if you have noticed things you are in good company. Read as much as you like. Ask what you wish. And if you would ever rather not ask it in the open, you know now that you can write to me. E.S.
We retrieve what we can from the teeth of time. (after J. Aubrey)
