A note from the administrator.

I have had to close the forum to new members. Registration is shut. I'm sorry for it - but I can no longer vouch for who comes through the door.

You may also find that certain older topics are no longer where you left them. I have, with great reluctance, removed a small number of threads and posts from this forum. I did so at the written request of a firm of solicitors acting for the landowner, who hold that the material touched on matters they would prefer were not aired in public.

I have complied, because I am one man and they are not. I want it set down plainly, here, that I did so under protest, and that I do not accept the grounds. Nothing removed was untrue. Nothing removed was anyone's business to suppress.

But I will not delete this board. What is left here stays, and you may read it for as long as I can keep the lights on. I have locked the doors; I have not burned the house. I have kept copies of everything. I would ask, gently, that those of you who hold anything of your own do the same.

The cottages on the green

#1 Post by Marlborough_Nan »

I dont know if this is the right board but it didnt feel like chat. There are three cottages dark on our green now, curtains down, gardens gone to nettles. The Pratt place and the two beside it. A firm bought them, solicitors, the letters come from London, nobody you could put a face to. Nobody local. They just sit there empty. It gives me a cold feeling, three houses with no lights, and I cant rightly say why.
just an old woman who remembers when the green had three shops.

its land agents nan. london money buys cheap in the quiet villages and sits on it, holiday lets or waiting for the planning to turn. depressing but it aint a mystery, its just money. half the county's going the same way.
born under Cherhill, never moved more than five mile from it.

It is very likely money, Bill. But Nan's cold feeling is the right one even so. A village is its lived-in houses, and when they go dark one by one and nobody new ever comes, something is being lost that the money does not show on paper. I am sorry about the green, Nan.

Nobody knows who the firm is, Janet, that is the part. You write to the address and a different name signs the reply each time. I asked at the post office, and even Brenda couldnt trace who is behind it, and Brenda can trace anybody. There. I have said it and I feel daft. Probably just money, like Bill says.
